Allen specialises in investment property and secured lending and much of his work involves finance-related property transactions. He acts for a number of banks and building societies in connection with secured loans for investment and development properties.

Real estate investment

  • Advising on the £multi-million acquisition of a portfolio of over 70 dry-cleaning units let to Johnson Cleaners UK Ltd in various high street locations throughout the UK.
  • Advising on agreements relating to the development of Travelodge Hotels nationwide.
  • Advising on the £107m disposal of One America Square, a 13-storey office building in the EC3 area of the City of London to the Government of Qatar.
  • Acquisition from BAA Lynton of the 364-room Jurys Inn Hotel at Heathrow.
  • Acquisition of a portfolio of Sainsbury's supermarkets.

Real estate finance

  • Advising on the £240m refinancing of an office portfolio by issuing bonds secured against the properties for the Claywood Group; the directly issued commercial mortgage-backed securities were listed on the London Stock Exchange.
  • Advising two substantial offshore family trusts on the financing and acquisition of a number of corporate groups via Luxembourg and Gibraltar-based structures for a total consideration of €2bn. The corporate groups owned a number of commercial portfolios comprising hotels, offices and business parks located in Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and Holland. The Dutch offices included in the portfolio were acquired for €1.2bn, making it the largest office deal in Dutch history. The acquisition was backed by Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse, with each bank financing one of the acquisitions.
  • Advising on the corporate reorganisation and £482m securitisation of a portfolio of 22 properties for the Fordgate Group. The CMBS notes were listed on the Irish Stock Exchange.
