Fladgate LLP is delighted to have acted for striker Alvaro Morata in connection with his transfer from Real Madrid to Chelsea FC in a record transfer (in terms of deal value) for the club.
A cross-firm team advised on various aspects of the transaction led by James Earl, Head of the Sports Business Group alongside sports partner Alan Wetterhahn and associate Muhammed Bhaimohmed.
Commenting on the transfer, James said: “It is fantastic to have been able to advise one of Europe’s leading strikers, Alvaro Morata, on his transfer to Chelsea Football Club and it is clear that this move has the ability to be hugely beneficial to club and player alike. The timeline was extremely tight and the range of challenges and issues diverse. Transfer deals of this nature are becoming ever more complex, reflecting the need for advice on a myriad of elements, including corporate, tax, regulatory, IP, image and media rights, and employment. This matter had to accommodate a number of competing interests and, of course, was against the usual background of intense press speculation. It has been a pleasure to have been able to act for Alvaro, drawing on the deep experience of the Sports Business Group at Fladgate, and we wish him every success in his move to Chelsea”.
Fladgate has a wealth of experience within the sports sector, having had an established sports practice for many years which has recently been bolstered by the hire of a team from Pinsent Masons, led by James Earl, and more recently a key individual, Alex Haffner, from Dentons. The Sports Business Group’s clients are primarily drawn from football, motor racing, cricket, golf and cycling.
