The dynamics of family wealth have changed in recent years as families have become more culturally diverse and more geographically spread out.

At the same time, the rules governing wealth transfer, particularly in relation to tax, have grown in complexity and disputes over family wealth have increased.

Our private wealth team specialises in advising on all aspects of wealth structuring and wealth transfer. We support entrepreneurs, property owners and families, both in the UK and internationally, in identifying and then implementing the arrangements that best suit their individual needs. We have particular strength in explaining to and supporting our clients with the tax planning implications of wealth planning, including structuring the purchase of UK real estate.

We are well placed to assist individuals who, through their wealth or family connections, have links to the UK or who are moving to or from the UK and need advice on immigration (including investor and entrepreneur visas), family and matrimonial matters.

In response to the prevalence of disputes over family wealth, we provide strategic advice to trustees, executors and attorneys on how to manage and execute their duties, responsibilities and relations with beneficiaries.  We are also able to advise on reputation management matters and have been involved in some of the most significant defamation cases in the UK.

  • Scandinavian family – advising a family with assets in France, Gibraltar, the UK and the US on appropriate holding structures and a tax efficient strategy for passing assets down the generations.
  • High net worth individual – contract for the construction and purchase of a new motor yacht from an American yachting shipyard.
  • Family – providing inheritance tax planning advice to a family with a substantial property investment business. This included reorganisation of family companies and the implementation of an arrangement to mitigate the potential tax without compromising control or the living standards of the elder generation.
  • Cross–border estate – advising on a US$83m US/UK cross–border estate administration including art, sculptures and antiques based in the UK.
  • Members of a French family retailing conglomerate – project managing the purchase of a substantial residential property in Hampstead, London. The transaction involved complex financial arrangements that included international trust issues.

  • Swiss resident individual – advising an individual planning to move to the UK on appropriate structures to minimise his exposure to tax on his worldwide assets and implementing arrangements in conjunction with lawyers and trustees in Switzerland and Jersey.
  • Divorce proceedings – advising in connection with acrimonious proceedings within a divorce, where the parties had shareholdings in six family companies. This required advice in connection with the family proceedings and also company advice, including the appointment of a forensic accountant and valuer.
