International independence

Globalisation, the changing patterns of capital flows and the relentless advance of technology and communications have already transformed the nature of business, accelerating the development of new markets, introducing new competitors and bringing new opportunities and challenges.

The proportion of business that is solely domestic is diminishing and the need for legal services that can deliver on a world stage is growing every day. Technical excellence across borders is increasingly expected by clients, but allied to this is the need for a nuanced appreciation of the cultural differences that endure and that can still raise the greatest barriers to successful cross-border trade.

At Fladgate, we offer our clients with international business a technically expert, efficient service, characterised by commercial and cultural awareness and delivered by experienced, multilingual, multi-qualified teams of lawyers. Our approach, as it is across the whole firm, is to provide a partner-led, solutions-focused service that combines legal and transactional excellence with practical efficiency.

Nearly 40% of our business comes through non-UK clients. We support and advise a wide range of companies and individuals with international concerns, including many who are investing into, or doing business with, the UK.

The international strength of our London-based team is further enhanced by our extensive network of overseas lawyers, accountants, bankers and other advisers. We are adept at co-ordinating multi-jurisdictional teams, drawing on our international relationships where necessary, to manage our clients’ needs around the world.

Our international strategy is based on our resolute independence. Rather than operating a number of overseas offices, which would restrict the choice of who we partner with, we aim to combine our lawyers’ experience with that of the most appropriate local law firm. This enables us to provide our clients with advice from the best-equipped specialists with the most relevant experience in each jurisdiction, delivered in a collaborative way.

We are a member of the International Lawyers Network, a worldwide non-exclusive association of high quality full service law firms in over 60 countries.  Fladgate’s head of litigation, Simon Ekins, is the present chair of the board.
