Ian Smith is an associate in the construction department at Fladgate.

He specialises in general construction including transactional and contentious matters.

Ian acts for developers, contractors, funders and private clients in preparing and negotiating construction documentation and construction disputes, including adjudications and international arbitrations. He has advised on projects in the UK, Europe, Japan and China. Ian has worked on a number of PFI projects, including their acquisition, variation, and termination, and has acted on disputes arising out of PFI contracts.

An example of the matters on which Ian has advised is acting for an international engineering company in relation to three international arbitrations arising out of disputes involving the refurbishment and upgrade of a substantial oil refinery in Algeria.

He trained at Fladgate and qualified as a solicitor in the construction team in March 2014.
