Michael McCartney is a partner in the employment department at Fladgate.
He primarily advises businesses on a broad range of issues. His practice includes acting in high value litigation disputes in the High Court and Employment Tribunal where he has gained particular experience of advising on restrictive covenant issues and international disputes.
Michael has extensive experience of advising clients in the pharmaceutical, IT, media and financial services sectors on the employment aspects of multi-jurisdictional cross-border transactions and restructurings. He has a large international dimension to his practice, working closely with counsel and in-house lawyers across the EU and North America on regional corporate and employment matters.
Michael regularly acts for litigants in High Court business protection claims where allegations of breach of restrictive covenants are involved. Most recently he acted for a global pharmaceutical company in 2018 in a successful claim for the return of valuable confidential information and injunctive relief.
He also acted for Jardine Lloyd Thompson Plc in the case of Willis Ltd & Anor v Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group Plc & Ors, a claim for US$100m damages and injunctive relief arising from a large scale recruitment exercise.
Michael is consistently ranked by the Legal 500 for his expertise in employment law.
He was educated at Foyle & Londonderry College and Trinity College, Dublin (graduating in 1996).
He is a member of the ELA and the International Committee of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Labour and Employment Law.
